Who are you, SATAN?
There was a discusion between me and a friend and we had argued about the book of Job and (the) Satans (sah-tahn) role in this. He claimed that Satan was an angel working for the L-RD, and I claimed that he was a fallen angel (such as the one believed to be portrayed as a snake in the book of Genesis). Now this followed with us arguing that the Devil was not actually in the book of Job and that it was actually an angel called Satan (the accuser). we read through the book of Genesis and saw no references to the Devil at all. So the final question (especially for Don Meecha, we would particularily like to hear what you have to say about this matter, however, other people are welcome to answer) is does the Devil appear in the Jewish texts at all or is it a creation of Christianity?

NOD commented on May 30, 2010: You must first realize that many actual names From the Torah were changed. There is actually much more to the Torah than found in present translations. If you look at the word created in hebrew you find the consonants beit, reysh and alef. beit: by, with, his beit reysh: pure, clean, beloved, son, heir beit, reysh, alef: He created reysh, aleph (Rah): idea, companion, friend, evil, wicked, malign Depending on what one was studying and the subject of the text, the Almighty Spirit might lead someone to translate beit, reysh, aleph: He created. By His Pure Clean Beloved Son and Heir, He created. With His.... By His Beloved Son, He (Ale-oh-heem) created Rah. Rah was created a companion, became a friend, turned evil and wicked. Rah spoke harmful untruths. Rah is the name of the one christins call satan before her fall. Lucifer was used to replace the consonants heh, yod, lamed, lamed. heh, yod: the jackal lamed, lamed: nocturnal, dark When Rah was removed from authority and cast down to the Earth she became the jackal (someone who does menial tasks to serve another's purpose. satan just means adversary. Always remember you can loose everything including your life, but if you keep your Salvation everything is going to be okay. keep studying. DON |

Ben Masada commented on April 02, 2010: If you read Moses Maimonides' opus prima, "The Guide for the Perplexed," you will see that HaRambam claims that the personage Job never existed. The book is just a Jewish novel to teach about the place of Israel in the Counsel of God. And about Satan, according to Judaism, it is only a concept to illustrate the evil inclination in man. Satan does not exist as a being. As such, it was created by Christianity in order to inspire fear and keep the people in the Church. Satan for many people is like the resurrection of the dead for Paul, who, in his Letter to the Corinthians said that if the dead won't resurrect, let us eat and drink for tomorrow we die. (I Cor. 15:32) Something, anything, as long as the Christian faith remains conditional. |

DonMeecha commented on March 09, 2010: Hello Sebi! Thanks for the question. Rev. 12:9states, "And the great dragon was thrown down, the serpent of old who is called the devil and Satan, who deceives the whole world; he was (E)thrown down to the earth, and his angels were thrown down with him." This passage clearly indicates that the personification of this angel named “Satan” truly is the, devil, the original serpent in the Garden of Eden & the deceiver of the whole world. As well, there are other passages which state clearly his “fallen nature” like the following passage in Isaiah 14:8b-21 where we find the prophet speaking to the King of Babylon in what is called a prophecy of double reference. This is where a prophecy begins w/one subject person, in this case the king, but then identifies the “spiritual force” behind him: "Since you were laid low, no tree cutter comes up against us.Sheol from beneath is excited over you to meet you when you come; It arouses for you the spirits of the dead, all the leaders of the earth; It raises all the kings of the nations from their thrones. They will all respond and say to you,'Even you have been made weak as we, you have become like us. Your pomp and the music of your harps have been brought down to Sheol; Maggots are spread out as your bed beneath you and worms are your covering. How you have fallen from heaven, o star of the morning, son of the dawn! You have been cut down to the earth, you who have weakened the nations! But you said in your heart, 'I will ascend to heaven; I will raise my throne above the stars of God and I will sit on the mount of assembly in the recesses of the north. I will ascend above the heights of the clouds;I will make myself like the Most High.' Nevertheless you will be thrust down to Sheol, to the recesses of the pit. Those who see you will gaze at you, they will ponder over you, saying, 'Is this the one who made the earth tremble, who shook kingdoms, who made the world like a wilderness and overthrew its cities, who did not allow his prisoners to go home?' All the kings of the nations lie in glory, each in his own tomb. But you have been cast out of your tomb like a rejected branch, clothed with the slain who are pierced with a sword, who go down to the stones of the pit Like a trampled corpse. You will not be united with them in burial, because you have ruined your country, you have slain your people. May the offspring of evildoers not be mentioned forever. Prepare for his sons a place of slaughter because of the iniquity of their fathers. They must not arise and take possession of the earth and fill the face of the world with cities." Then, the passage from Ezekiel 28: fills in some more information for us about this Satan character. Once again, it is a passage of double reference speaking first to a human, then to the spiritual force behind him: "Son of man, take up a lamentation over the king of Tyre and say to him, 'Thus says the Lord GOD, 'You had the seal of perfection, full of wisdom and perfect in beauty. You were in Eden, the garden of God; every precious stone was your covering: the ruby, the topaz and the diamond; the beryl, the onyx and the jasper; the lapis lazuli, the turquoise and the emerald; the gold, the workmanship of your settings and sockets, Perfection was in you on the day that you were created these were prepared. You were the anointed cherub who covers, I placed you there & you were on the holy mountain of God; you walked in the midst of the stones of fire. You were blameless in your ways from the day you were created until unrighteousness was found in you. By the abundance of your trade you were internally filled with violence, and you sinned. Therefore I have cast you as profane from the mountain of God. And I have destroyed you, O covering cherub, from the midst of the stones of fire. Your heart was lifted up because of your beauty; you corrupted your wisdom by reason of your splendor. So, I cast you to the ground & I put you before kings, that they may see you, "By the multitude of your iniquities, in the unrighteousness of your trade you profaned your sanctuaries. Therefore I have brought fire from the midst of you; it has consumed you and I have turned you to ashes on the earth in the eyes of all who see you. All who know you among the peoples are appalled at you; you have become terrified and you will cease to be forever." Hopefully, this will help. At least with where to go. Blessings to you, Rabbi Don |
