Messianic 101

What is Messianic Judaism?
What exactly is Messianic Judaism? Who are member of the Messianic community? Are Messianic believers Christian? How can someone believe in Jesus and still be Jewish? What do Messianics believe? Where can Messianic believers celebrate the Sabbath? How can a Gentile be a Messianic? What are some of the struggles Messianics face today?

The Jewish Messiah
Messianic Judaism is a religious community who adheres to the belief that Yeshua of Nazareth is the resurrected Jewish Messiah and Savior. Messianic Jews practice their faith in a Torah-Observant manner, celebrating the Jewish feasts and festivals with the Messiah as the focus of each celebration. Messianics celebrate all of the biblical holidays as well as many of the customs which are consistent with the Scriptures, and Messianic Jews keep their Jewish lifestyle and cultural identity.

Messianics assert that no serious study of Revelation and the end times should ever leave out the significance of God’s appointed times, the major Jewish Festivals as described in the Torah (Old Testament), and their fulfillment as prophetic events as it relates Yeshua as the Messiah. Just as the Spring Festivals (Passover, First Fruits, Shavuot) were literally fulfilled to the day at Yeshua’s first coming, the Fall Festivals (Yom Teruah, Yom Kippur, Sukkot) will be literally fulfilled to the day at Yeshua’s second coming.

A New Church?
Yeshua did not come to reject Israel or to take back what He promised, but only to fulfill what He promised. He came to make Israel a better Israel, not to start another religion. Messianic Judaism believes that it is ultimately necessary for all Jewish people to know their Messiah Yeshua, but God has not demanded any Jewish person to become Gentile or Western Christian in custom. Rather, it is ultimately necessary for Christianity to remove its pagan influences and return to the roots of Judaism.

Messianic Gentiles
Some people may think to themselves, how can I worship like a Jew if I’m not Jewish? The term "Messianic" (or Christ) refers to anyone, Jew or gentile, who has chosen to follow the Messiah Yeshua. Scripturally, the term "gentile’ refers to someone who was born of non-Jewish parents and who did not identify himself with Israel through ritual conversion and circumcision. Thus, a "Messianic gentile" could be applied to anyone who was born of non-Jewish parents and who is a follower of Yeshua.
