Christians Celebrate Holy Week in Israel
Pilgrims in Israel mark the holiest week in the Christian calendar, Holy Week leading up to the celebration of Jesus’ resurrection on Easter Sunday, as they retrace the path of Jesus’ crucifixion through the streets of Jerusalem. A handful of pilgrims carries wooden beams when walking the Via Delrosa, or Way of Sorrow, visiting each of the 14 stations of the cross.
Visitors chanted hymns and prayed continuously at the very spot tradition holds as the location of Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection: The Church of the Holy Sepulcher. Visitors in the city hailed from Brazil, the Philippines, Poland, Spain,North America, and African nations.
